The Thomas Palliative Care Unit at VCU Massey Cancer Center provides a unique, home-like atmosphere for inpatient care on the fourth floor of North Hospital on the MCV campus. This location provides easy access to all appropriate therapies and interventions throughout the health system. Inside this comforting environment, all of the nurses are certified in palliative care and are experts in pain and symptom management. The 11-bed unit offers a liberal visitation policy. Children of all ages, as well as pets that meet unit guidelines, are allowed to visit patients. The unit has a family room with a TV and a play area for children. Just beyond the comfortable living room is a fully-equipped kitchen. Patients admitted to the unit receive the full spectrum of palliative care: pain and symptom management; assessment of physical, psychological, emotional and spirtual needs; assistance with establishing patient-driven goals for care, followed by coordination of care to ensure that needs are fully met. Massey’s thoughtfully balanced inpatient facility is designed to help patients enjoy quality of life. The Unit can accommodate any person who needs help with symptom management related to any serious illness.

The Clinical Nurse I job Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This job assists the health care team
with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. This job provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. This job delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. This job also safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

The Clinical Nurse II job demonstrates a mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. This job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. This job recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. This job mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families. This job provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. This job delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. This job safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

The Clinical Nurse III job demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. This job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. This job anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. This job provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. This job delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care. This job safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions."

The Nurse Manager ensures that excellent patient care is provided by a nursing staff of sufficient number and competency to meet patient needs. Care is delivered in an environment that is healthy, healing and respectful to all patients, visitors and staff.

The Nurse Manager provides quality customer service to patients of all ages, their families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians and co-workers, ensuring that everyone will be treated courteously, quickly and with respect. This role establishes and maintains an environmental control plan, coordinates materials management for the department, assists in monitoring clinic activities.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current RN Licensure in Virginia AHA BLS Certification or equivalent

Experience REQUIRED:
5 years of relevant clinical experience with 2 of those years of progressive leadership and/or supervisory/management experience

Experience PREFERRED:
Experience in academic medical center environment

Education/training REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Must be enrolled in a master’s degree program at the time of application and must be complete within 36 months of hire.

Special consideration will be given for applicants enrolled in baccalaureate to doctoral programs who will not attain a master’s degree and may require longer than 36 months to complete the terminal degree.

If the Master’s degree is not in nursing then it is required to have a BSN from an accredited school.

Education/training PREFERRED:

Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field.

If the master’s degree is not in Nursing, then it is required to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.

Independent action(s) required:
All day-to-day operations of the unit are handled independently.
Advice and guidance are sought from the Director on an as needed situational basis and when there is a major impact on activity outside the unit.
Actions that are taken without prior approval include daily operational functions and leadership of staff.
With Guidance of Supervisor; advice and guidance are sought for termination of employees, handling employee grievances, review of annual unit goals and budget, approval on unit guidelines and procedures and review of staff annual performance evaluations.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):
All employees of the nursing unit report to this position; however, supervisory responsibilities may be delegated as appropriate.

Additional position requirements:
Required frequent visibility on all shifts and weekends to enhance staff communication and monitor staff effectiveness.
