Job Description

The Pediatric Nurse Educator serves as a staff development professional providing direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in area of responsibility. This role includes professional development and empowerment of staff as well as management of resources to promote desired outcomes with attention to quality, efficiency and cost.

The Pediatric Nurse Educator serves as a clinical instructor for undergraduate nursing students and a liaison to the VCU School of Nursing. Additionally, the Pediatric Nurse Educator serves in a clinical capacity delivering bedside patient care with a high level of expertise in assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible required

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current RN licensure in Virginia required
AHA BLS Certification

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of two (2) years of current staff development or health care education experience
Minimum of five (5) years of relevant clinical nursing experience of which three (3) years specifically in pediatric nursing practice
Experience with presentations at a unit level

Experience PREFERRED:
Academic health care experience

Education/training REQUIRED:
Masters Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing or within one semester of completion

Education/training PREFERRED:
RN certification in specialty area

Independent action(s) required:
Has full authority and accountability for direction and leadership of program planning, guideline development, setting of practice standards within the confines of organizations/divisions/units mission, goals and objectives.
Manages human, fiscal and other resources to ensure quality programs/processes/services with measurable positive outcomes.
Functions in a nurse faculty role for the VCU School of Nursing coordinating the clinical experiences for the undergraduate pediatric course and teaching the clinical component of the course in the hospital setting.
As a faculty member, will attend faculty meetings and participate in faculty committees.
May also teach for the School of Nursing in clinical courses other than pediatrics such as undergraduate health assessment lab or Nursing Fundamental clinicals.
For VCU Health Systems, will work in direct patient care and model expert pediatric clinical care.
Will assist with staff education including in-services, yearly competencies and teaching nurses new to the acute care pediatric unit.
Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice guidelines.

Additional position requirements:
The position is predominately day shift Monday through Friday, but working until 7:30 p.m. in the evening will sometimes be required.
The incumbent will be expected to work approximately one weekend shift per month and two holiday shifts per year at the hospital.
